>POST BOP OR MODERN MAINSTREAM starts with the rise of Wynton Marsalis in 1979. That/his generation of players chose an updated variety of hard bop that was influenced by the mid-'60s' Miles Davis Quintet. This music often features complex chordal improvisation has become the norm for jazz.  Modern Mainstream or Post-Bop are terms that symbolize the eclectic jazz scene. WITH THAT IN MIND LETS LISTEN TO:

>MODAL MUSIC has a subtle tension. Solo lines, while melodic, don't always progress or resolve exactly as the you may be accustmed to hearing. When a new mode is introduced for example, the tonal center shifts, keeping you off balance with a subtle unpredictability. Miles Davis composed in a modal structure. Kind of Blue is arguably the definitive modal jazz album. John Coltrane and Bill Evans went on to become modal innovators in their own right. FOR THIS EXAMPLE, LET'S JUST GO TO THE SOURCE:
