CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
Although it appeared at a time when Count Basie was enjoying respect from all quarters (as evidenced by the pop acclaim of several Grammy awards and the jazz faithful's enthusiasm for his concert at Newport), Chairman of the Board was, comparatively, a low-profile session. The record was surrounded in Basie's discography by several prize-winners and a parade of studio collaborations -- with vocalists Tony Bennett, Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, and Billy Eckstine, plus arranger Neal Hefti. This 1958 date for Roulette was a rare chance for the orchestra to perform on its own, and listeners to hear how powerful the band could be when its concentration was undiverted. Of course, Basie's band already possessed three fine arrangers (Frank Foster, Thad Jones, and Frank Wess) and at least a dozen solo voices. Each of the ten songs on Chairman of the Board were originals by Foster, Jones, Wess, orErnie Wilkins, all of them arranged by the composer. The record is admittedly heavy on the blues, but it's a brassy, powerful vision of the blues; Foster's "Blues in Hoss' Flat" and Wilkins' "Kansas City Shout" take the band back to its hometown, beginning with a subtle swing but ending with a raucous display of power from each section. The contributions by Jones andWess provide a necessary complement to that forceful swing. Jones' "Speaking of Sounds" employs the woodwinds to provide color and texture, while Wess' "Segue in C" relies on bassist Eddie Jones and Basie's piano to lead the band while Wess himself takes several choruses on alto sax. A dynamic date, it shows the "new testament" edition of Basie's orchestra in top form.

FRANK FOSTER
A very talented tenor saxophonist and arranger, Frank Foster was associated with the Count Basie Orchestra off and on from 1953 to 1995. Early on, he played in Detroit with many talented local players and, after a period in the Army (1951-1953), he joined Basie's big band. Well featured on tenor during his Basie years (1953-1964),Foster also contributed plenty of arrangements and such originals as "Down for the Count," "Blues Backstage," and the standard "Shiny Stockings." In the latter half of the 1960s, Foster was a freelance writer. In addition to playing with Elvin Jones (1970-1972) and occasionally with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, he led hisLoud Minority big band. In 1983, Foster co-led a quintet with Frank Wess and he toured Europe with Jimmy Smith in 1985. Although influenced by John Coltrane in his playing, Foster was able to modify his style when he took over the Count Basie ghost band in 1986, revitalizing it and staying at the helm until 1995. Outside of hisBasie dates, Foster led sessions for Vogue, Blue Note (1954 and 1968), Savoy, Argo, Prestige, Mainstream, Denon, Catalyst, Bee Hive, SteepleChase, Pablo, and Concord. Foster suffered a stroke in 2001 that prevented him from playing the saxophone, but he continued to compose and arrange music during the first decade of the new millennium. He died at home in Chesapeake, Virginia in late July 2011; Frank Foster was 82 years old.

I remember the day Leroy Vinnegar died. I was watching one of Portland's local news channels and even though I knew he was not well, it still struck me with great sadness. I have many Leroy Vinnegar stories and I imagine you do too. Here are some of my memories and some from the public record on the life of Leroy Vinnegar.

In 1997, I was standing off stage right at Cathedral Park when I took this. In Mr. Vinnegar's glasses you can see the reflection of the audience. His watch has his own image on it. We all wanted one of those.

ADJUSTING THE ENDPIN ON HIS BASS
I was emceeing a show with Mr. Vinnegar. The room was electric, musicians were on stage, instruments were out of their cases and all were checking their sound, positioning, and information (especially in my case). Leroy was on stage and he was a significant presence, with his great stature and that of the great bass instrument he moved so gracefully with. Mr. Vinnegar called to me and asked me to adjust the endpin on his bass. I was 36 years old or so, and was in awe of this legend. This isn't by any measure, the first conversation I'd had with Leroy, but they never became common. I knew I was talking with a pillar of the music I loved and I knew too, how much I could learn, so I jumped at ANY opportunity. He lifted the bass off the ground and I got down low and began groping around to find the mechanism that adjusted the endpin. Was it a screw or slide?- I had never done that before, which began to become apparent. The bass was getting heavy and Mr. Vinnegar was very patient. Some excruciating moments went by as I felt around, without success. Saving me, another musician in the band saw this, came over, bent down, loosed the nut allowing the endpin to drop to the ground, then tightened it in a matter of seconds. It was done. I apologized, we all smiled, me with embarrassment and those around me, at my embarrassment.

TEDDY EDWARDS IS IMPORTANT
I emceed a series of programs in the 90's called "Jazz Night Live." They were weekly affairs at the Red Lion Hotel, 310 SW Lincoln here in Portland. They were produced by a gentleman we affectionately called (as he requested), "The Captain." His name was actually Craig Stringer. The room was an event of enthusiastic audience and great musicians. As I introduced the band, I said a little about each member. I had about 5 sentences prepared for Mr. Vinnegar who was that evening's bassist. After my first sentence about his history, he called out, "and Teddy Edwards." With each sentence pause, another call from Mr. Vinnegar, or then from a band member, would come, helping to get me the message, that Teddy Edwards was very important. He had recruited the band with his calls and they followed their leader that night and had his back with vigor and humor. It was as if Teddy Edwards was in the room with us.

The owner of a swinging "walking bass" manner, comfortable in several idioms but not a prolific soloist, Leroy Vinnegar had a couple of heydays -- in the '50s and '60s as a busy freelance recording sideman, and as a member of Les McCann's most popular combo in 1969. As such, he played a major role in two of jazz's biggest hit albums, the trend-setting My Fair Lady set with Andre Previn and Shelly Manne (1956) and the Eddie Harris/Les McCann soul-jazz manifesto Swiss Movement (1969).

A completely self-taught musician, Vinnegar "fooled around" with the piano but gravitated toward the bass upon his first encounter. After turning pro at 20, he was the house bassist at Chicago's Beehive in 1952-1953. Upon moving to Los Angeles in 1954, Vinnegar quickly settled in as the bass player of
choice on records by Stan Getz, Shorty Rogers, Chet Baker, Shelly Manne, and Serge Chaloff, among others. He also started recording as a leader in 1957, reeling off a pair of albums for Contemporary with the word "walks" appropriately inserted in each title. Starting in 1959, Vinnegar would work and tour frequently with Joe Castro and Teddy Edwards while continuing his freelance activities. In the early '80s, he appeared on television as a member of the Dixieland-styled Panama Hats behind actor/banjoist George Segal. Although a bout of ill health caused him to move to Portland in the late '80s, Vinnegar remained an active player into the '90s, and he returned to the recording scene as a leader in 1992 (on Contemporary again) with a CD entitled -- what else? -- Walkin' the Basses. Vinnegar died of cardiac arrest in August 1999, a loss to the jazz world and a particular blow to the Portland jazz community.

A veteran drummer long overshadowed by others, but finally in the 1990s gaining recognition for his talents and versatility, Roy Hayneshas been a major player for half a century. He worked early on with the Sabby Lewis big band, Frankie Newton, Luis Russell (1945-1947), and Lester Young (1947-1949). After some engagements with Kai Winding, Haynes was a member of the Charlie Parker Quintet (1949-1952); he also recorded during this era with Bud Powell, Wardell Gray, and Stan Getz. Haynes toured the world with Sarah Vaughan(1953-1958); played with Thelonious Monk in 1958; led his own group; and gigged with George Shearing, Lennie Tristano, Eric Dolphy, and Getz (1961). He was Elvin Jones' occasional substitute with John Coltrane's classic quartet during 1961-1965, toured withGetz (1965-1967), and was with Gary Burton (1967-1968). In addition to touring with Chick Corea (1981 and 1984) and Pat Metheny (1989-1990), Haynes has led his own Hip Ensemble on and off during the past several decades. When one considers that he has also gigged with Miles Davis, Art Pepper, Horace Tapscott, and

Dizzy Gillespie, it is fair to say that Haynes has played with about everyone. He led dates for EmArcy and Swing (both in 1954), New Jazz (1958 and 1960), Impulse (a 1962 quartet album with Roland Kirk), Pacific Jazz, Mainstream, Galaxy, Dreyfus, Evidence, and Storyville. In 1994, Haynes was awarded the Danish Jazzpar prize, and two years later, he received the prestigious French Chevalier des l'Ordres Artes et des Lettres. In the late '90s, Haynes formed a trio with pianist Danilo Perez and bassist John Pattitucci, and they released their debut album, The Roy Haynes Trio Featuring Danilo Perez & John Pattitucci, in early 2000 on Verve. Haynes' son Grahamis an excellent cornetist. Haynes paid tribute to Charlie Parker in 2001 with Birds of a Feather, his fourth release for the Dreyfus Jazz label, which was subsequently nominated for a Grammy in 2002;Fountain of Youth followed two years later. Also released in 2004,Quiet Fire compiled two of his prior releases for Galaxy (1977'sThank You Thank You and 1978's Vistalite) into one back-to-back record. Whereas appeared in mid-2006, and it earned Haynes a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo.

Born in Mexico City on November 1, 1971, Antonio Sanchéz started playing drums at the age of five and began performing professionally early in his teens. He pursued a degree in classical piano at the National Conservatory in Mexico and in 1993 he moved to Boston to enroll at Berklee College of Music and graduated magna cum laude in jazz studies. Since his move to New York City in 1999, Sanchéz has become one of the most sought-after drummers on the international jazz scene. He has performed and recorded with some of the biggest names in jazz, most prominently in the Pat Metheny trio alongsideChristian McBride; the guitarist's larger group; and the reunion band with Metheny, Steve Swallow, and Gary Burton. Other leaders he has worked with include Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, Charlie Haden,Toots Thielemans, and Joshua Redman. His interest in education ledSanchéz to join the faculty at New York University in 2006. In addition to performing and teaching, he has conducted clinics and master classes, and played at drum festivals worldwide, including the Modern Drummer Festival Weekend, Zildjian Day, and Montreal Drum Festival. Sanchéz has been a featured cover artist on magazines like Modern Drummer, Musico Pro, Percussioni, and Drums & Percussion. In 2007 his first recording as a leader, Migration, was issued.

At the height of his career, Norman Granz was one of the most powerful non-musicians in jazz. He always fought for the music he believed in (having a love for freewheeling jam sessions), for his artists (whom he accurately considered to be among the greatest in the world) and against racism, forcing many hotels and concert venues to become integrated in the 1940s and '50s. He studied at UCLA, served in the Army, and then in, 1944, began to make an impact on jazz. Granz supervised the award-winning film short Jammin' the Blues (which featured Lester Young) and put on a concert at the Philharmonic Auditorium in Los Angeles that he dubbed Jazz at the Philharmonic. The latter was such a big success that soon Granz was able to take the all-star jam sessions on domestic and eventually worldwide tours. The producer loved to team together top artists from the bop and swing worlds in "battles" and, although these rousing concerts were often criticized by conservative and somewhat humorless jazz critics, the jams resulted in a great deal of rewarding music. Not content with merely presenting concerts, Granz often recorded the performances even though, at 10-15 minutes, they were too long for a conventional three-minute 78. Granz founded Clef (1946) and Norgran (1953), eventually consolidating his music when he founded Verve in 1956. The rise of the LP in the early '50s was perfect timing, and Granz was able to release many JATP performances on records.

In addition to his work as a record company head and a concert promoter, Granz managed Ella Fitzgerald, and in 1956, he largely started Verve as a label to feature her recordings. Among the many other artists who prospered in the '50s due to Granz were Oscar Peterson (whom he discovered and managed), Lester Young, Roy Eldridge, Dizzy Gillespie, Art Tatum, Count Basie, and Ben Webster. By the late '50s JATP was drastically slowing down, and in 1960, Granz sold Verve to MGM. He functioned mostly as a concert promoter and the manager of Fitzgerald and Peterson in the '60s, but in 1973, he returned full-force to the record business, founding the very successful Pablo label. Many of Granz's favorite artists had had erratic recording careers in the '60s (including Ella, Basie, Roy Eldridge, and Dizzy Gillespie) but the rise of Pablo resulted in their discographies being uplifted and greatly expanded. Granz extensively recorded his artists (including Joe Pass who soon found fame, Zoot Sims, Sarah Vaughan, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, and especially Oscar Peterson), emphasizing the spontaneity of jam sessions. The number of Pablo releases slowed down during the '80s and in 1987, Granz sold the label to Fantasy where most of his sessions were eventually reissued on CD. Norman Granz retired to Switzerland, having greatly helped the music he loves. He died in Geneva from complications of cancer on November 22, 2001.

As a member of the groundbreaking Ornette Coleman-led quartet that launched the free jazz renaissance, Billy Higgins remains one of the most important and controversial drummers in music history. An uncommonly versatile and intuitive player, his nimble rhythmic patterns achieved a perfect balance between function and form, inspiring the great trumpeter Lee Morgan to remark "[Higgins] never overplays, but you always know he's there." Born October 11, 1936, in Los Angeles, Higgins began his career playing R&B, supporting headliners including Bo Diddley, Amos Milburn, and Jimmy Witherspoon. In 1953 he joined high school friend and trumpeter Don Cherry in the Jazz Messiahs, a group also featuring saxophonist James Clay; three years later, he began his session career, in the months to follow appearing on recording dates led by saxophonist Lucky Thompson and bassist Red Mitchell. Around this time, Higgins and Cherry met Coleman through mutual friend Clay. A virtual unknown, the Texas-born saxophonist was supporting himself with menial jobs while working diligently to hone a musical lexicon liberated from the restraints of conventional harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic structures. Both Higgins and Cherry soon joined Coleman's rehearsal group, which spent years woodshedding before finally securing its first live gigs in 1958, opening for Paul Bley at L.A.'s Hilcrest Club. Audiences were either angered or simply baffled by Coleman's radical sensibility, which he later dubbed "harmolodics," and with the 1958 release of his debut LP, Something Else!!!! The Music of Ornette Coleman, the controversy spread throughout the jazz populace, dividing musicians, critics, and fans alike.

Higgins followed Coleman when he relocated the group to New York City in 1959 to begin a residency at the Five Spot Café. Love it or hate it, their music was the talk of the town, and with the addition of new bassist Charlie Haden, Coleman finally began to make concrete the sounds and structures he'd pursued for years. His 1959 Atlantic Records debut, The Shape of Jazz to Come, remains a watershed album by any definition and a schism-creating turning point in the history of the avant-garde. The accolades now heaped on Coleman also launched his collaborators to prominence, and Higgins soon emerged as one of the most sought-after drummers in contemporary jazz, proving a master of both the hard bop sensibility still dominant throughout the jazz community as well as the more fluid and abstract approach of the new generation. When a 1961 drug bust stripped Higgins of his cabaret card, prompting his exit from Coleman's band, he focused on studio work, becoming the unofficial house drummer at Blue Note Records during the label's creative zenith. In the decade to come, Higgins appeared on seminal dates including Dexter Gordon's Go!, Jackie McLean's A Fickle Sonance, and Lee Morgan's The Sidewinder, proving time and again his consummate skill and flexibility; even after Liberty Records acquired Blue Note in 1967, he remained much in-demand, maintaining his position as the premier drummer of the avant-garde with contributions to landmark efforts including Archie Shepp's 1971 LP Attica Blues and Coleman's comeback effort, Science Fiction. Higgins was also a frequent collaborator of pianist Cedar Walton, and with bassist Bill Lee and trumpeter Bill Hardman led the big-band ensemble the Brass Company for several years during the early '70s.

After close to two decades on tour and in New York, Higgins settled back in Los Angeles in 1978. The following year he recorded his first-ever session as a leader, the Red label LP Soweto. Higgins recorded a few more headlining sessions in the years to follow but seemed to value most his role as a sideman, supporting saxophonist Joe Henderson and trombonist Slide Hampton during the first half of the 1980s. After appearing behind star and longtime collaborator Dexter Gordon in filmmaker Bertrand Tavernier's 1986 love letter to jazz, 'Round Midnight, Higgins reunited with Coleman, Cherry, and Haden for a 1987 tour that culminated in a new studio album, In All Languages. The following year Higgins teamed with poet Kamau Daaood to found the World Stage, a storefront enclave that hosted creative workshops, community activities, and live performances. He regularly tapped his extensive professional network to lure many of the biggest names in jazz to the World Stage site both as performers and as tutors, and ultimately Higgins turned his attention to teaching in a formal setting as well, serving on the jazz faculty at UCLA. Higgins spent much of the remainder of his life battling liver disease, a manifestation of the hepatitis he contracted decades earlier. In March 1996, he underwent a liver transplant and when his body rejected the new organ, he was forced to submit to a second procedure just 24 hours later. Higgins nevertheless returned to music a few months later, traveling to New York to renew his collaboration with Coleman. However, by 2001 his new liver began to fail, and while waiting to find a donor, he succumbed to pneumonia on May 3. Higgins was just 64 years old at the time of his death.

Jazz is music of the moment, and jazz players such as Chuck Israels, despite great accomplishments in the past, often prefer to focus on current work.

"I certainly like to live in the present," said the bassist and composer in a recent interview.
Israels, 74, is best known for his work with the Bill Evans Trio from 1961-66. He recorded with Stan Getz and Herbie Hancock and has worked with other jazz legends, from Billie Holiday to John Coltrane. He directed the National Jazz Ensemble, recorded with the Kronos Quartet, and spent 24 years as Director of Jazz Studies at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash...

Born and raised near Philadelphia to a musical family, Joe Chambers heard not only the rock and roll of Louis Jordan and Slim Gaillard, but the classical of Vivaldi, Wagner, Beethoven and Mahler. Drums came early. “I think an instrument picks you.
I used to play on post and pans when I was little. I was setting them up like a kit at four years of age, so the instincts were there.”
More taken with Lester Young and Lionel Hampton than Little Richard, Chambers nonetheless soon joined a band playing all the R&B hits of the day. “We played 'house rock,' horn players walking the bar like Big Jay McNeely and Tiny Bradshaw. But then I started hearing esoteric jazz like Miles Davis, and that grabbed me. When I heard that at age 13, immediately I was hooked.”

Chambers' parents also played a big role in his musical vision, and prompted him to learn more. “The level of music that they listened to compared to today was just incredible, in terms of popular culture. Bebop is the most revolutionary period in American music. I call it the era when drummers freed themselves, from Jo Jones to Kenny Clarke to Max Roach.

Preachers used to preach against jazz. Then the people stopped dancing, killing the big bands. Bebop moved jazz from folkoric to a more cult-oriented and intellectual sound. That's why R&B came in. There was a need for more proletarian music. Bebop became cult music. It was a revolutionary time. I witnessed all of that.”

Earning his undergrad degree in music from the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music, by age twenty-two Chambers had cut his first session with Freddie Hubbard's Breaking Point album. The snowball began , from the aforementioned recording sessions to road work with Harold Land, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Eric Dolphy, and Dizzy Gillespie.

A member of the '60s fraternity that recorded some of Blue Note's greatest music, Joe Chambers can lay claim to

a place alongside such innovative artists as Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner and Bobby Hutcherson. Chambers' intense drumming, a trademark blend of cymbal-driven forward motion, deep rhythmic continuity, and explosive creativity, graced many landmark albums which fostered one of the most fertile eras in recent jazz memory. Chambers' credits include Hubbard's Breaking Point, Hutcherson's Components, Shorter's Schizophrenia and Etcetra, Hill's Compulsion, and Tyner's Tender Moments, as well as Archie Shepp's New Thing at Newport, Charles Mingus' Like a Bird, and Chick Corea's Tones for Joan's Bones and many others.

Chambers' legacy is not only as drummer extraordinaire. A conservatory trained musician, Chambers' compositions have been covered by Hutcherson, Hubbard, and M'Boom. More recently, folowing a handful of fine solo recordings, Chambers scored soundtracks for several Spike Lee films, including Mo' Better Blues. Still, for all his accomplishments, Joe Chambers is a very humble, almost self-deprecating musician. For all the profound music of which he's played a role, Chambers views his legacy as a day in the life. “When we were making those records we weren't thinking about making history, we were just doing it at the time. You have to realize, I was engrossed in all the subplots of the '60s. In those days it was a different mind set. It was tied to the anti-establishment, anti-war peace and love thing. I was hooked up with that. We didn't talk about peace and love, but we were definitely spaced out. We were making the music.”

Mirrors marks Joe Chambers' return to the Blue Note fold. Including compositions both old and new, with renditions of material by Rod Temperton and Janet Jackson, the album spotlights Joe Chambers as not only a highly influential drummer (who still burns), but as a composer with a special touch. Seemingly sidelined after the whirlwind of the 1960s, Chambers continued to write, play and perform. Joe Chambers Plays Piano, Double Exposure, Phantom of the City, and The Almoravid displayed a subtle hand at work, the result of his early classical influences and invaluable experience with such heavyweights as Wayne Shorter and Andrew Hill.

Mirrors shows Chambers to be his own man, a dedicated perfectionist, who, while cut from '60s cloth, has followed his own path to realize a sublime, swinging, soulful music. The compositions on Mirrors flow, one into another, with an undeniable purpose and logic. Nothing is without reason, each song resolving, then opening into the next. The title has special meaning for Chambers. “Actually, there is a twofold meaning. The psychological meaning is that back inthe '60s I was introspective, and that has continued in my life, always looking at mirrors. On a technical side, it designates a type of writing called mirror writing. It's a style of composition where the theme returns and is examined in a song. You turn it up, you turn it down, you look at it from many directions.”

Mirrors' lineup reflects Chambers' past and present: Vincent Herring, saxophones; Eddie Henderson, trumpet; Mulgrew Miller, piano; and Ira Coleman, bass. Chambers performs on both drums and vibraphone. Like a suite, Mirrors tells a story where each tale is connected, where the musician's performances reveal deeper shades of meaning upon repeated listening.

The famous Art Kane photo from 1958, known as "Great Day in Harlem" or simply "Harlem 1958," places Golson alongside Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Thelonius Monk and a host of other musicians.

The historic photo and Benny Golson both got renewed attention, due to their roles in the Steven Spielberg movie The Terminal. A product of one of jazz's most illustrious families, Percy Heath and his sublime, swinging bass served as the cornerstone of the Modern Jazz Quartet for over four decades. Heath was born in Wilmington, NC, on April 23, 1930. The second of four children, he was raised in Philadelphia, receiving his first instrument, a violin, at the age of eight. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1944, and assigned to fly P-4s and P-47s as a member of the Tuskegee Airmen. Heath managed to avoid combat, and after World War II ended, he purchased a standup bass and enrolled in Philadelphia's Granoff School of Music. After a stint behind pianist Red Garland, he signed on with the house band at the local Down Beat Club. There he met bebop trumpeter Howard McGhee, and by 1947, Heath and his saxophonist brother Jimmy were touring as members of McGhee's sextet, appearing the following year at the premiere Festival International de Jazz in Paris. The Heath brothers relocated to New York City in 1949, and there Percy collaborated with a who's who of postwar jazz icons including Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, and Sonny Rollins. From 1950 to 1952, he and Jimmy reunited as members of Dizzy Gillespie's sextet.

The roots of the Modern Jazz Quartet lie in Gillespie's sextet as well. Pianist John Lewis, vibraphonist Milt Jackson, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Kenny Clarke met in 1946 as members of Gillespie's then-current lineup, and in 1951 formed the MJQ, originally dubbed the Milt Jackson Quartet in an effort to appease bookers in search of a formidable headliner. When Brown -- Heath's primary influence -- left the group in 1952, Heath was invited to take his place, with Jackson's top billing shelved in favor of the Modern Jazz Quartet. Honing a subtle, sophisticated bop aesthetic shaped by the structure and formalism of classical composition, the MJQ's music proved so intricate and demanding that shortly after joining the group, Heath was forced to study under bass titan Charles Mingus to improve his intonation. The MJQ first found favor in Europe, and when Clarke settled there permanently in 1955, drummer Connie Kay was named his replacement, cementing a lineup that would remain unchanged for close to two decades. Whenever the group was temporarily inactive, Heath returned to his busy session schedule, by his own count playing on more than 300 LPs over the course of his career. In contrast to the elegant restraint that typified his MJQ playing, his freelance work captured the bassist at his most dynamic and propulsive.

Financial considerations forced the Modern Jazz Quartet to dissolve in 1974, at which time Heath teamed with brother Jimmy and their youngest sibling, drummer Albert, in the Heath Brothers. Boasting a more freewheeling, mainstream sound than the MJQ, the vehicle also allowed Percy to explore the cello, which he retuned to bass intervals. The Heath Brothers recorded and toured intermittently over the next two decades, their work interrupted in 1983 when the MJQ re-formed to accept a lucrative offer to tour Japan. The group reconvened often in the years to follow, with Albert Heath assuming the drummer's seat following Kay's 1994 death. In 1997 Percy announced his intention to retire from the grind of touring, and the MJQ quietly dissolved. Jackson died in 1999, Lewis two years later. Although Heath occasionally performed with his brothers, his twilight years were largely spent fishing in and around his home on Long Island. In 2004, the small Daddy Jazz label released A Love Song, the 81-year-old Heath's first and last recording as a bandleader. He died following a struggle with bone cancer on April 28, 2005. -Allmusic.

Let us too remember the birthday of Victor Feldman.

Victor Feldman was born in Edgware, Middlesex in 1934.
He caused a sensation as a musical prodigy when he was “discovered” at age 7. His family were all musical and his father founded the Feldman Swing Club in London in 1942 to showcase his talented son.
His first professional appearance was playing drums at No 1 Rhythm Club as a member of the Feldman Trio with brothers Robert on clarinet and Monty on piano accordion. In 1944 he was featured at a concert with Glenn Miller's AAAF band, featured inevitably as “Kid Krupa”. Carlo Krahmer encouraged Feldman to play the vibes which he did first in the Ralph Sharon Sextet and later in the Roy Fox band. He worked in India in 1952 and 1953 in a band led by pianist Eddie Carroll. His vibraphone and conga drum playing were notable, but it was as a pianist that he became best known.

Before leaving the U.K. in 1955 to work in the U.S., Feldman recorded with Ronnie Scott's orchestra and quintet from 1954 to 1955, which also featured other important British jazz musicians such as Phil Seamen and Hank Shaw, among others. It was Scott who recommended that Feldman emigrate to the U.S., which he did in 1957. Once there, his first steady work was with the Woody Herman Herd. From there he went on to join Buddy DeFranco. He recorded with many different jazz artists, including Benny Goodman, George Shearing, Cannonball Adderley and Miles Davis, most notably on Davis' 1963 album Seven Steps to Heaven, the title tune being his own composition. The 5-CD Shelly Manne Black Hawk set, originally released on LP in September, 1959, is a good representation of Feldman's unmistakable driving “comping” behind the soloists, helping to define the session as a valuable hard bop genre element.

In 1957 Feldman settled in Los Angeles permanently and then specialized in lucrative session work for the US film and recording industry. He also branched out to work a variety of musicians outside of jazz, working with artists such as Frank Zappa in 1967, Steely Dan in the 1970s and Tom Waits and Joe Walsh in the 1980s. Feldman died at age 53, a year after the death of his wife, to whom he was completely devoted. -All About Jazz

ANAT FORT IS IN THE STUDIO... Born in Israel, she studied classical piano, listened to 80's pop, sounds of the Middle East, all contributing to her stylistic signature.

She has played with Paul Motian, Ed Schuller and Perry Robinson with whom she recorded her second CD. This collaboration prompted ECM Records to produce the recording without their having initially been in the studio; a rare occurrence. A Long Story came out in 2007 to critical acclaim.

The success of her first ECM CD resulted in a long-awaited project, the first recording of the Anat Fort Trio: And If. This recording came out in 2010 and like its predecessors, features all Anat's original compositions. And If was selected by Slate Magazine as one of the Ten Best Jazz CD's of 2010, an honor she shares with one of her most influential jazz heroes, the legendary Keith Jarrett. The trio is currently touring in support of this new recording.

A Blowin' Session is one of the greatest hard bop jam sessions ever recorded; it is filled with infectious passion and camaraderie. It's also the only time tenor saxophonists Johnny Griffin and John Coltrane would play together on record. Initially Coltrane wasn't scheduled to be on this date, but Griffin saw him on his way to Rudy Van Gelder's studio and asked him to join the remaining musicians, third tenor Hank Mobley, trumpeter Lee Morgan, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Art Blakey. These musicians were all associates within the same East Coast hard bop scene of the time; they came from the Jazz Messengers and Miles Davis' quintet, and many had played with Dizzy Gillespie's big band. Showcased on this April 8, 1957, session are two standards, "The Way You Look Tonight" and "All the Things You Are," along with two original Griffin compositions, "Ball Bearing" and "Smoke Stack." (An added bonus on the 1999 Rudy Van Gelder remastered edition is an alternate take of "Smoke Stack.") Of special note is "The Way You Look Tonight," featuring the three tenors trading off with complexity and speed that is still astonishing, especially in the case of Griffin (dubbed the world's fastest saxophonist) and Coltrane's ability to navigate complex chord changes over a fast tempo.

A Jazz Celebration: Seven Bands, Fred Wesley under Kenney Polson direction.

Hosford as well as six other area bands will be performing from 6:30 - 9:00.
Funk and jazz artist Fred Wesley, most noted for his work with James Brown, will also be performing. Tickets cost $10 and 85% of any tickets being sold our jazz bands.

Mr. Polson needs help pushing ticket sales in order to buy t-shirts for the
band and to get a jump on a good set of vibes that will cost about $2000.

The Hosford Jazz Band is participating in Cleveland High School's Jazz Celebration on Friday, January 21st at 6:30.
Seven area bands (I am still trying to find out mor about these and will pass along any info I get) as well international trombonist Fred Wesley will be performing.

It promises to be an entertaining evening.

Tickets are only $10 for adults and will be sold both at the door and in advance from jazz band students. Advance student tickets are only $8.

The event is looking for business sponsorships. For $35, businesses can submit a business card sized ad and for $50 a half sheet ad (coupons are encouraged). The advertisements will be placed in the program brochure. For a $250 - $2000 sponsorship, your business will be named on the poster as well as receive a full page ad in the program.

This is a great way to spread the word about your business and to help a great tax deductible cause.

KENNY POLSON

Like many students, Kenney Polson started playing alto saxophone in junior high school (Bakersfield, CA). Enjoying music enough to pursue a career in it, Mr. Polson attended Fresno City College (Fresno, CA) and earned an Associate of Arts Degree in Music. Kenney attended California State University- Fresno and earned a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Music Education. He taught in Fresno, CA for 5 years and afterwards was hired as the instrumental music coordinator at an international school in Bogotá, Colombia for 2 years. Later, he became the instrumental music coordinator in a international school in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for 5 years. Kenney left Brazil to earn a master Degree in Jazz Composition and Arranging at Howard University in Washington DC. After graduating, he taught in Beijing, China for one year. Returning to the states, he taught at Merced Community College for 2 years where he directed the Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, and the Jazz Ensemble. When he moved to the Portland area he began teaching at Marylhurst University teaching jazz improvisation, jazz arranging, and also directing the jazz ensemble. His first public school teaching assignment in Oregon was at the Arts and Communication Magnet Academy where he took a group of inexperienced musicians to new heights. They first place in several jazz competitions including the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow, Idaho where they competed against over 20 other bands. Kenney's most recent teaching assignment is at Cleveland High School where he has brought the band program to prominence in the Portland area. The Jazz Band has numerous awards and has also performed with jazz great, Red Holloway.
During all this time, Kenney Polson performed extensively with his own bands as well as others. Kenney Polson has performed with the following national artists: Wynton Marsalis, Jimmy Heath, Kenny Burrell, Phil Woods, David Sanborn, Frank Wes, Lee Garrett, Gil-Scott Heron, Philip Walker, James Moody, Bill Watrous, Little Richard, Betty Swan and others… He has traveled and performed in over 40 countries.
Kenney Polson’s first smooth jazz CD “Paradise” contains 14 selection, 9 of which were penned by Polson himself. More than half of the CD was recorded in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with the nation’s top studio musicians. “No More Lonely Nights” from Paradise earned the number 32 spot on the national adult contemporary charts in 2001. Kenney’s second CD “Serendipity” is a blend of smooth jazz and old school R&B and it includes several national artists. The artists included on “Serendipity” are: Tom Grant (smooth jazz pioneer); Bruce Conte (formerly with Tower of Power); Michael Henderson (formerly with Miles Davis); Phil Upchurch (guitarist with George Benson); Larry Gittens (trumpeter with Kool & The Gang); Marcos Reyes (percussionist with WAR); and Fred Wesley (formerly with James Brown).

FRANK WESLEY

As the longtime musical director for soul legend James Brown's renowned backing unit the J.B's, trombonist Fred Wesley was the world's most famous sideman, orchestrating the sinuous grooves and contributing the bold, surgically precise solos that defined the language of funk. Born July 4, 1943, in Columbus, GA, Wesley was raised in Mobile, AL. At age three, he studied classical piano under his grandmother, a music teacher, but much preferred the big-band music played by his father, Fred Wesley, Sr., who also chaired the music department at Mobile Central High School. Wesley Jr. remained with the piano until middle school, first adopting the trumpet before moving to the trombone. He made his professional debut at age 12 in a big band led by his school's music teacher, E.B. Coleman, and soon was sitting in with local R&B acts as well. While studying music at Alabama State University, Wesley briefly tenured with the Ike and Tina Turner Revue as well as Hank Ballard and the Midnighters before serving in the U.S. Army, playing with the 55th Army Band and graduating from the Armed Forces School of Music. After returning from military duty in 1967, Wesley formed his own project, the Mastersound, fusing R&B with hard bop. The group splintered within a year, however, and when he received a phone call from J.B's trumpeter Waymon Reed, who told him Brown was seeking a new trombonist, Wesley accepted the offer.

He served as an adjunct professor of jazz studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

New direction from Program Director Matt Fleeger spikes interest, listenership

Matt Fleeger ended up as the Program Director for KMHD because of skateboarding.

"Skateboarding got me into jazz," said Fleeger at his office above Willamette Park in the newly carved out KMHD section of the Oregon Public Broadcasting building.

Fleeger, an avid skateboarder since his youth, cites the groundbreaking skateboarding video, "Video Days," as his inspiration to learn more about jazz. The soundtrack for the video features the sound of John Coltrane behind skateboarders doing fancy tricks. That, and the fact that Fleeger saw the indie punk band Fugazi's guitarist wearing a Coltrane shirt, convinced him that jazz was indeed cool.

"I went to a store and bought "Blue Trane," he said. That launched Fleeger into jazz, which brought him first to San Antonio from his native Pennsylvania, and last year to Oregon to be the man behind the jazz at KMHD.

Fleeger continues to skate, but after jazz wove itself into his life, he knew he had to pursue the music.

Art Blakey, when asked about his music being labeled hard bop, insisted, "I don't know what they are talking about. All we try to do is play music, basic music. How are you going to swing if you don't swing hard?”

Hard Drive: Out of This World and The Next World Too, featuring the second formal group of Messengers, swings hard and aims high. After all, Sputnik, the first satellite, was launched into space by the Soviet Union in just a week before the session in October of 1957.

Art Blakey and his energetic Messengers sent a business-as-usual message to the jazz audience with trumpeter Bill Hardman, tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin and bassist Spanky DeBrest, guided by the experience of pianist Junior Mance and Blakey's steady, voracious drums.

The group's enthusiasm and comfort with one another is evident in seamless solo exchanges in Jimmy Heath's For Minors Only, and in DEO-X, Hardman's composition built on a tonal scale opened by Blakey's clear and creative stick sounds. As Hardman said about Blakey: "When he's there, you don't have to worry about anybody being behind you. Even if it were just him, with no piano or bass, it would be pretty cool.”

Griffin later reflected, "We had more fun than anybody. A ball every night." His two compositions, Right Down Front and Krafty, are well-interpreted highlights of the session.

Hard Drive may not be the powerful Moanin', recorded a year later for Blue Note with names like Golson, Morgan and Timmons. Nor does it contain a future leader like that of the 1980s lineup that produced Wynton Marsalis, who reinvigorated hard bop.

It is, however, an intoxicating teacher-student session, all the way through to the last composition by Philadelphia pianist Leon Mitchell. His Late Spring showcases this talented group of musicians, who shared Art Blakey's desire to swing hard.

The East-West Tour!

Hello friends,

I'm going on tour this week, and you can come along. It's being billed as The Karla Harris East-West Tour, and will take place this Thursday and Friday, 11/18-19.

Featured on this tour is Karla Harris, the songbird from Kansas City. Backing her up will be myself on piano, Dave Captein on bass and Todd Strait on drums.

We will begin our tour this Thursday night at Wilf's Restaurant by the train station in downtown Portland, at 800 NW 6th Ave. The curtain raises at 7:30 PM. Call 503-223-0070 for reservations.

Influential elder (born October 3, 1922 Earl Lavon Freeman) jazz tenor saxophonist originally became known for his work with the Horace Henderson Group during the Late 1940s, and Sun Ra's band in the early '50s. During that period, he also played with his musical brothers, drummer Bruz (Eldrige) Freeman and guitarist George Freeman, (with pianists including Ahmad Jamal, Andrew Hill, and Muhal Richard Abrams). Chicago Tribune critic Howard Reich says, "...For technical brilliance, musical intellect, harmonic sophistication and improvisatory freedom, Von Freeman has few bebop-era peers."

The Chicago Reader's Monica Kendrick adds "He changes everything he touches, mostly for the better, with his swaggering tenor tenderness."

Along with his contemporaries Gene Ammons, Johnny Griffin, and Clifford -- the founder of the "Chicago School" of tenor players which adapted the work of Lester Young and Ben Webster, and influenced a number of players including Johnny Griffin & Clifford Jordan. To round out the musical family, the saxophonist's son Chico Freeman is also a well-known jazzman.

In the early 1960s, Freeman toured with Milt Trenier and, despite reasonably regular appearances in New York and Europe, the 75-year-old Freeman has remained to this day in Chicago, where you can see him almost weekly at clubs like Andy's, and has been the host of legendary jam sessions, like his Tuesday events at the New Apartment Lounge. You can catch him with the likes of John Young, Jodie Christian, Mike Raynor, Bettye Reynolds, Kurt Elling, and the rest of his musical family. His 75th birthday was celebrated with a headlining slot at the 1997 Chicago Jazz Festival. He joined one of the city's youngest tenor stars, Frank Catalano, in an afternoon set at the 1999 Fest.

Paul Chambers (b.1935) life's arc intersected with many other great talents in the 50s and 60s. This confluence is considered Hard Bop. Listen at 11:28am as "Chamber Mates", guitarist Kenny Burrell, pianist Hank Jones, drummer Art Taylor tell a story with bassist Paul Chambers (d.1969). -Shawn Kirkeby

One of the top bassists of 1955-1965, Paul Chambers was among the first in jazz to take creative bowed solos (other than Slam Stewart, who hummed along with his bowing). He grew up in Detroit, where he was part of the fertile local jazz scene. After touring with Paul Quinichette, Chambers went to New York, where he played with the J.J. Johnson-Kai Winding quintet and George Wallington. He spent the bulk of his prime years (1955-1963) as a member of the Miles Davis Quintet, participating in virtually all of Davis' classic recordings of the era. When he left, "Mr. P.C." (as John Coltrane called him in one of his originals) worked with the Wynton Kelly Trio (1963-1966) and freelanced until his death. Chambers, a consistently inspired accompanist who was an excellent soloist, made many recordings during his brief period, including some with Sonny Rollins, Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Donald Byrd, Bud Powell, and Freddie Hubbard, in addition to a few as a leader. -Allmusic.com -Scott Yanow

Roy Haynes drums (b.1925), on stage with Chick Corea keyboard (b.1941), Christian McBride bass (b.1972), Kenny Garrett sax (b.1960), THE FREEDOM BAND, takes the mic at the end of the show, after his vigorous drum solo and says, "Chick". I recorded more of Roy Haynes feelings. I have also seen another video on YouTube capturing Chick Corea introducing a song (with no title :) by pianist and composer Bud Powell. This CD is a change of pace for Abbey Lincoln. She interprets ten standards (plus four of her originals), all love songs performed as duets with pianist Hank Jones. Although there is some social commentary, the emphasis is on male-female relationships and Lincoln sounds more optimistic than usual. Among the more memorable selections are Duke Ellington's "Black Butterfly," "The Nearness of You," "You Came a Long Way from St. Louis," Fats Waller's "Jitterbug Waltz" and "You Won't Forget Me."
